In most cases, you do not need to be home while I mow your lawn.
Many regular customers are at work, running errands or simply getting on with their day when I visit. An unattended lawn-mowing service can work very smoothly, but only when access, pets and the exact job have been sorted out beforehand.
The key is making sure I can safely reach every agreed area without having to guess.
Access needs to be arranged before the visit
If the booking includes only an open front lawn or nature strip, access may be straightforward.
A backyard is different. A locked side gate, a key that does not work or a passage blocked by bins can prevent the mower from reaching the lawn. If nobody is home, that may mean part of the job cannot be completed.
Before the first visit, tell me whether the gate will be unlocked, where a key will be left or how an agreed access code should be used. Avoid sending sensitive access details until the booking and arrival arrangements have been confirmed directly.
The first visit can still happen without you
Some customers prefer to be home for the first mow so they can walk around the property and explain what they want. That can be helpful, but it is not always necessary.
Clear photos and a useful description can often do the same job. Show the whole front lawn, backyard and nature strip, along with gates and any narrow side access. Mark the areas that are included if the property boundaries are not obvious.

Pets must be safely separated from the work area
Please do not leave a dog loose in the yard because it is usually friendly.
Lawn mowers and line trimmers are noisy, gates need to be opened and an animal may react differently when somebody enters the property without its owner present. Even a calm pet can become frightened, protective or curious around moving equipment.
Arrange a secure area indoors or in a separate part of the property that I do not need to enter. Tell me if a gate must stay closed at all times and make sure the arrangement still allows access to every lawn included in the quote.
Confirm exactly which areas are included
“Please mow the lawn” can mean different things at different properties.
Does it include the front, backyard and nature strip? Is there a small patch behind the garage? Is one section maintained by a neighbour or body corporate?

A clear scope prevents an unattended visit from turning into a guessing exercise.
Move anything that blocks the lawn or gate
You do not need to tidy the whole garden before I arrive. A few practical checks help the visit run properly.
Remove toys, hoses, loose garden tools and pet waste from the mowing areas. Make sure bins, bicycles and parked vehicles are not blocking the gate or sitting tightly against an edge that needs trimming.
If something is too heavy to move, show it in the quote photos so I can allow for mowing around it.
Weather may change the timing
Melbourne weather does not always cooperate with a booked mowing day.
If the grass or ground is too wet to mow safely and leave a reasonable finish, the visit may need to move. That makes a reliable contact number useful even when you are not at the property.
You do not need to wait at home for an uncertain weather window. Just make sure you can receive a message about a delay or rescheduled time.
Extra garden jobs need agreement
An unattended visit should not involve unexpected decisions about extra paid work.
If you want weeding, leaf collection, trimming or a wider garden tidy-up as well as mowing, include those jobs before the booking is confirmed. I will not assume you want additional work simply because I can see weeds beside the lawn.
The same applies to a badly overgrown area or a large amount of green waste. The scope and likely time should be discussed first.
Agree on the finish and clippings
Some lawns produce a small amount of fine, dry material. Others leave heavy clumps that need collecting, particularly when the grass is long or damp.
If you have a preference, mention it before the visit and say whether there is room in the green bin. The existing guide to collecting grass clippings after mowing explains when the difference matters.
Paths and nearby hard surfaces affected by the work should still be left tidy.
Regular visits become easier
Once access and priorities are established, you should not need to explain the property from the beginning every time.
A regular lawn-mowing schedule also keeps the amount of growth at each visit more predictable, although the timing may need to change as Melbourne moves from winter into faster spring growth.
If anything changes — a new lock, building work, a pet in the yard or a vehicle blocking the side gate — please let me know before I arrive.
