Spring Cleaning in Bayside Melbourne: What Is Actually Worth Cleaning?
The first warm weekend after winter has a habit of exposing things you somehow did not notice in July.
Sunlight comes through the windows and suddenly the dust on the skirting boards is obvious. You open a door that has been closed most of winter and notice the marks around the handle. The bathroom looks fine from a distance, but the shower screen tells a different story.
That is usually when the idea of a spring clean starts sounding appealing.
A proper spring clean does not mean cleaning every object in the house simply because September has arrived. The better approach is to deal with the areas that ordinary weekly or fortnightly cleaning does not always reach.
Start with the rooms that have worked hardest over winter
For most homes, that means the kitchen and bathrooms.
These areas are cleaned regularly, but there is a difference between maintaining them and giving them more detailed attention.
In the kitchen, look beyond the bench and sink. Cupboard fronts, splashbacks, kickboards and the areas around frequently used appliances can gradually collect marks and residue.
Bathrooms are similar.
A normal clean may keep the basin, toilet and shower under control, while soap residue, edges, fittings and less obvious surfaces slowly need more attention.
Spring is a sensible time to catch those jobs up.
Look at the edges of the room
One of the quickest ways to tell whether a house needs a deeper clean is to stop looking at the middle of the room.
Look at the edges instead.
Skirting boards, door frames, window sills, corners and the areas behind furniture often show the difference between routine cleaning and a more detailed clean.
They do not necessarily need attention every week.
That is exactly why they can become noticeable over time.
Pay attention to the things everybody touches
Light switches, door handles and frequently used cupboard fronts are easy to overlook because they are small.
They are also touched constantly.
Walk through the house and look at them properly rather than from across the room. Marks that have gradually become part of the background are often much more obvious once you start looking for them.
Don't turn spring cleaning into a three-day punishment
This is where people make spring cleaning harder than it needs to be.
They decide the entire house has to be transformed in one weekend.
By Saturday afternoon, half the cupboards have been emptied, the spare room looks worse than when they started and everybody has had enough.
Work in priorities.
If the bathrooms need the most attention, start there.
If the kitchen is the problem, deal with it properly before moving on.
A finished room is much more satisfying than six rooms that are half cleaned.
Regular clean or spring clean?
If your home is already professionally cleaned weekly or fortnightly, you may not need a huge top-to-bottom clean.
Instead, it can make sense to add a few occasional detail jobs to the normal service.
If the house has not had a thorough clean for some time, a dedicated deeper clean may be more realistic.
The difference is mainly about time and detail.
Regular cleaning is there to maintain the home. A spring or deep clean gives more attention to areas that have gradually built up between those regular visits.
What should you tell your cleaner?
Do not simply book a “spring clean” and assume everybody has the same definition.
Tell the cleaner what is actually bothering you.
Maybe it is the bathrooms.
Maybe it is dust around skirting boards and window sills.
Maybe the kitchen needs considerably more attention than the bedrooms.
A short list of priorities gives the cleaner something useful to work from and makes quoting much more accurate.
Photos can also help when one particular area needs substantial work.
