You can stay home or head out
For most house-cleaning appointments, you do not have to stay home while the work is being done.
Some customers prefer to be there, particularly for the first visit. Others would rather hand over access, get on with the day and return to a clean house. Both arrangements can work.
The important part is agreeing on access, priorities, pets and how the property should be secured before the booking begins.
Being home for the first clean can be useful
The first visit is when the cleaner is learning the property.
A short walk-through gives you a chance to point out the bathrooms that need the most attention, a surface that should not be touched, a room that can be skipped or an awkward door that needs to be locked a certain way.
You do not need to supervise the entire clean. Ten minutes at the beginning can be enough to confirm the plan, after which you can work in another room or leave if that suits you.
Being present can also feel more comfortable if this is the first time you have invited a cleaner into your home. Trust should be earned through clear communication and reliable work, not demanded before the first visit.
You can leave once the arrangements are clear
Many regular cleaning customers are not home during the appointment. They may be at work, taking the children out or using the time to run errands.
This can make it easier for the cleaner to move between rooms without working around phone calls, meetings or people walking over freshly mopped floors.
If you are leaving, confirm how the cleaner will enter and how the property should be locked when the job is finished. Do not rely on a vague message sent after the appointment has started.
A key safe, agreed key location or meeting the cleaner at the beginning are all possible options, depending on what you are comfortable with. Alarm instructions and any doors that must remain closed should be discussed in advance.
What if you work from home?
You do not need to disappear for several hours just because a cleaner is coming.
If you work from home, let the cleaner know which room you need and when. They can often clean that room first, leave it until last or skip it for that visit.
The arrangement works best when there is a clear plan. Moving from room to room every time the cleaner approaches can slow the job down and make it harder to finish the agreed priorities.
Choose one workspace where possible and keep access clear to the remaining rooms.
Tell the cleaner about pets
Pets are one of the most important details to discuss before an unattended clean.
A friendly dog can still become anxious around a vacuum. A cat may try to slip through an open door. Gates and internal doors may need to remain in a particular position.
Explain where each pet will be, whether they can approach the cleaner and what must happen before an outside door is opened.
If an animal is nervous, protective or likely to escape, secure it in a suitable area before the appointment. That protects the pet and allows the cleaner to work without guessing.
Put valuables and private paperwork away
This is sensible regardless of who is cleaning the home.
Jewellery, cash, medication and important documents should not be left scattered across the areas being cleaned. Putting them away protects your privacy and prevents small items from being moved accidentally.
You do not need to strip every surface bare. A quick tidy simply gives the cleaner safe access to the areas you want cleaned. Our guide on what to do before your cleaner arrives explains where that line sits.
Make priorities clear before you leave
If nobody will be home, the cleaner needs a usable brief.
Confirm the rooms included, the areas that matter most and anything that is outside the agreed scope. If one bathroom needs extra attention, say so before the visit rather than assuming it will be obvious.
A regular maintenance clean is also different from a first or deeper clean. If the home needs more detailed work, our guide to regular cleaning versus deep cleaning will help you choose the right starting point.
Direct communication makes unattended cleaning easier
When you are not home, you need to know who to contact if access fails, an alarm activates or the cleaner finds something unexpected.
Nash Property Services is owner-operated and police checked, so customers deal directly with the person responsible for the booking and the work.
Before the first visit, we confirm access, priorities, timing and how the property should be left. If you prefer to be there initially and head out for later visits, that is completely reasonable.
